Fifty Shades Darker : Movie Review

So, 2 years after part one of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is released we finally get to lay eyes on part II, Fifty Shades Darker. I must begin with the fact that I wasn't overly impressed with the original movie, rating it a 4.5 out of 10, it felt ill-paced and there didn't seem to be any chemistry captured between the actors, which given the base content of the novels, should've been present.

So I'm going to keep this brief, Fifty Shades Darker is in my mind a sequel which surpasses it's predecessor quite easily. It's pace is good, and both Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson look more realistic as a couple this time and not just looking like 2 awkward teens trying to do a Shakespeare play.

Maybe this is due to change of director, or maybe Dornan and Johnson realised that the backlash on social media over their plastic portrayal of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the original wasn't just overzealous fan girling, but legitimate feedback.

Either way, the audience seemed to love the less pretty-boy more stubbled appearance of Christian Grey this time and a much better flow to the movie overall.

On a side note, I found out that cinemas in America had 'banned' single men from attending, claiming that the distributor had informed them that it was basically 'porn' for women, which it really isn't.

I'm glad that sense has prevailed in Australia though, even if I was the only man in the whole session last night.

My Rating: This sequel is better than the original - 7 out of 10
