Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

Prepare to be thoroughly entertained by this movie! No, really! This movie is a cracker!

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is the latest film from the incredibly successful Marvel franchise, and without a word of embellishment, they have absolutely NAILED IT with this movie! It's so incredibly entertaining, super funny, visually amazing, action packed & heart warming, all bundled into 121mins of total awesomeness.

Like many of you reading this, I'm an avid movie fan who likes the super-hero genre, and it's safe to say that I've seen pretty much the entire wave of Marvel & DC movies in recent years. As such, I've come to expect a particular forumla when it comes to the action, CGI effects and story. This collection of super-hero films have all been of a particular quality and level of success, and as a result, I was prepared for "the usual" from this movie. I expected to like it, to be mildly wowed by some visual effects and to leave satisfied. But I was completely surprised and utterly delighted by just how much I enjoyed the crazy ride which is this awesome film.

Lucky for me, we got to see this movie ahead of everyone else, only because a brand new cinema opened in New Farm, Brisbane, a mere handfull of buildings away from where I live, woohoo! So, of course, we jumped at the chance to see it earlier than expected. By the way, New Farm Cinema 6 is pretty cool. It's a completely refurbished cinema that has been closed and unused for over a decade, finally restored to its former glory, but with amazing new sound, picture quality and great new comfy purple seats. Plus, the ticket prices give those huge cinemas a run for their money! All those visiting Brisbane should check it out. Hint to the budget conscious: Tuesday is their cheap day. All movie tickets are only $7.50. Nice!

Now, back to the film. Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (or Starlord ) is absolutely fantastic in this role. He's the perfect combination of good guy & goofball that you can't help but love the whole way through. I've liked him in "Parks & Rec", though I've never really raved about him as an actor, but my love for this guy has seriously tripled since seeing this movie. Actually, all of the casting choices are nothing short of brilliant. The beautiful & green Zoe Saldana as Gamora (who's performance in Avatar was, in my eyes, flawless), bulging beefcake wrestler Dave Bautista as Drax bringing the muscle & vulnerability, Vin Diesel as the very deep voice of Groot who you will fall in love with, and super-sexy Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, a bad-ass racoon who has so many great one-liners & is really at the heart of this madcap team.

You really have to give a mention to the incredible soundtrack for this film by Tyler Bates. It's a rollercoaster of a story with an equally dynamic soundtrack. Bates also wrote the soundtrack to many films including 300, Sucker Punch, Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead, & video games Killzone, God of War: Ascension, & Army of Two: The 40th Day.

You really should stop what you are doing and find the nearest cinema online to book your tickets immediately! I am seriously considering going a second time, something that I never normally do. It's just that great! "Guardians of the Galaxy" is hands-down my favourite film out this year! So, what are you waiting for people? Go! Enjoy!
